KALMIA GARDENS
OUR STORY
Founded in 2014 by Leah Gastler as a project for the Artist Diploma degree at Rice University, Kalmia Garden Chamber Music and Arts brings a small and flexible collective of classical musicians to an unexpected gem in Durham, Connecticut.
Situated on Gastler Farms, a working farm for several generations and now a Smithsonian-registered garden, Kalmia presents yearly seasons with weekend concerts showcasing programs of classical chamber music selected for their power, expressive scope, and eclectic interest. The musical impact is heightened by the intimacy of the venue itself. Amidst decorations of works by local artists and artifacts gathered over many years of life in an idyllic setting, the audience gathers for an experience that is no less than a modern American manifestation of the chamber music’s original setting. Up close and personal with no sound unheard, it’s no wonder that concertgoers consistently report that our concerts have a special status even for those who regularly see ensembles in large concert halls. Being able to walk outside to see the grounds with years of stone wall builds, plentiful flowers, and verdant gardens, is the completion of a truly bucolic musical experience. Come see our world-class music making and unforgettable location for yourself.
